Hora Somni
c. 5 minutes
Symphonic winds and percussion
Difficulty Grade 4
About this piece:
I composed this piece in late 2019 when writing large ensmeble music became a major creative and emotional outlet for me. At this time, I was experiencing fairly upsetting episodes of insomnia, through which I coped by playing piano late into the night. This piece was the product of my sleeplessness and was originally arranged for large jazz ensemble under a seperate title, “Undecided,” and premiered at the University of Denver in 2020. Though as time went on, it became swept under the rug; I later revisited it in 2023 realizing it’s potential as a symphonic wind piece. Taking on the new name “Hora Somni,” roughly meaning “the hour of sleep” in Latin, this work is zeitgeist in my musical catalogue. My sleep schedule has become more normal these days, but I spent many nights back then up late writing. This new title captures the dark mood and timbre of this work; something I had trouble putting a name to back in 2019.
