This piece was not written about any moment in particular, though when Ben commissioned me to write it he gave specific instruction about it’s mood. “Urgently beautiful, heartbreaking, but uplifting.” With this in mind, I set of to write a piece that captured these characteristics. Being one of the first through-composed piece of length I have ever undertaken, it’s completion did not come easy. I spent a lot of time reworking sections, jumping around between themes, and scrapping material. Eventually, I came to a point where all the material I needed was written on the page, but something didn’t seem right to me. Countless more hours of reworking and toil never solved my issue, though I couldn’t put my finger on what I didn’t like. So I decided to let it go and move on, which is how I came up with the title of this piece. Years later, I am happy with how it turned out, and believe that “moving on” and having space away from the piece was a good compositional decision; something I now do quite often now in the writing process.
